Earlier in June, Apple presented its future plans for artificial intelligence, dubbed Apple Intelligence. The objective is to deliver useful and relevant information in everyday life, with personal context and a new standard for privacy. In this article, we examine what is most relevant to you as an IT manager. Most features will launch this autumn, initially with support for US English, but let us dive in! 🤿

Finally: What do you, as an IT manager, need to consider right now?

1. Active AI Features

   Apple Intelligence integrates generative AI with personal context to enhance text processing, image generation, and Siri.

   
   

   Text Processing

   Apple is introducing AI-assisted text processing at the system level, allowing you to get assistance with text anywhere. This includes:

   - Proofreading with academic refinements.

   - Rewriting with a choice of friendly, professional, or concise tone.

   - Summarising text into key points, spreadsheets, or lists.

   - Describing edits made to the text.

   
   

   Image Generation

   Apple Intelligence is also launching image generation on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. You can create images based on text, keywords, or rough sketches across three styles: Animation, Illustration, and Sketch. This allows you to replace a sketch with a generated image in notes or produce unique images for emails.

   
   

   Fun detail You can search for photos in your library using natural language, such as “Jonas with stickers on his face”.

   
   

   Siri

   Siri is receiving a substantial upgrade with Apple Intelligence, making it more deeply integrated into your digital day-to-day life. It will feature improved language comprehension and can interpret and answer questions more naturally. Siri assists you faster, even if you stumble over your words, and retains the context of previous requests, ensuring a smoother flow.

   
   

   Background Activities

   Apple Intelligence brings enhancements to background activities, particularly the sorting and prioritisation of notifications on the lock screen. This reduces unnecessary distractions. The same applies to email, with automatic prioritisation of important messages and the grouping of newsletters and updates. Message threads and conversations can also be automatically summarised on the lock screen.
   
   

2. Privacy

   Apple is introducing a new privacy benchmark for artificial intelligence with Apple Intelligence. Most AI models run locally on the device, ensuring functionality is available without connecting to external servers. For more complex tasks, Private Cloud Compute is utilised, combining the security of local computing with additional processing power from the cloud. Servers with Apple Silicon ensure that data is never stored or exposed, and independent experts inspect the data centres prior to deployment. These are bold commitments for a crucial aspect of artificial intelligence usage.

   
   

3. Partners

   Apple is integrating ChatGPT into the operating systems across iPhone, iPad, and Mac, enabling you to access ChatGPT's expertise without switching tools. Siri can now draw on ChatGPT when required, always requesting permission first. For instance, if you ask Siri to plan a five-course meal, Siri will ask whether it should use ChatGPT to assist you. If approved, you will receive an answer in a flash (though without any automatic upgrade to lacking culinary skills 👨🏼‍🍳). ChatGPT will also become part of Apple's writing tools. IP addresses will be anonymised for requests, and enquiries will not be stored.

   
   

   Apple also stated that, going forward, they are exploring integrating further partners into this Siri “search base”, ensuring both broader and deeper expertise is readily accessible.

What do you need to consider right now?

As noted, this functionality is planned for release this autumn, initially exclusively for US English. There is limited information regarding availability in Norwegian, but we will ensure that all our customers receive updated information as soon as it becomes available.

One thing to bear in mind is that all these AI features on mobile phones have only been announced for the iPhone 15 Pro. Therefore, if you are responsible for mobile procurement and wish to secure this functionality, we recommend selecting the iPhone 15 Pro (or awaiting new models expected to launch this autumn). For iPad and Mac, all machines equipped with an M-series chip will be supported.
